One of the challenges in preserving Black heritage is the lack of historical research. To address this challenge, Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Humanities, and Freetown Village are partnering to present a day-long workshop sharing techniques and resources for uncovering, researching, and documenting Black heritage.

Qualified research is valuable in preparing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, developing local preservation protections, and for historical markers, articles, books, and interpretive projects. Well-documented history is also often required to be eligible for preservation grants.

The workshop will feature a performance by a Freetown Village interpreter showing how Black history can be brought to life, research and writing tips, and information about grant writing and grant-making organizations.
